Oi-Tsuki

- 1 min read

Oi-Tsuki is the lunge front punch of Karate. It takes its force by shifting the weight on your front leg, essentially performinga lunge. Still better than the Choku-Tsuki, it’s still more of an exercise/kihon move than an actual Kumite one.

Traditional execution:

  • Get in Heiko Dachi
  • Close both your fists
  • Extend one arm while making a one meter step with the leg that’s in the same side of the punch
  • Simultaneously, perform an hiki-te with your other arm
  • Kiai! at maximum extention (optional)
  • While retracting perform another move (e.g: another Oi-Tsuki)

Where to use (✅ - Use; ❌ - Don’t use; 🟨 - Last resource):

  • Sport Kumite: 🟨
  • Full-Contact Kumite: ❌
  • Self-Defense: 🟨
