Mawashi-Tsuki

- 1 min read

Mawashi-Tsuki is the rear hook of Karate. It’s actually very similar to the modern rear hook, the main diffrence being an higher elbow position compared to the hand (in boxing and kickboxing they are at the same level). While in full-contact is a great choice, most sport karate competion don’t allow hooks (or uppercats for the matter).

Traditional execution:

  • Get in Heiko Dachi
  • Close both your fists
  • Extend a leg while bending the opposite arm to a 90° angle (raising slightly the elbow from youar hand) and rotating it to your center
  • Simultaneously perform an hiki-te with the other arm
  • Kiai! at maximum extention (optional)
  • While retracting perform another move (e.g: another Mawashi-Tsuki)

Kumite execution:

  • Get in Kumite no Kamae and bounce a little
  • Extend a little the lead leg while bending the opposite arm to a 90° angle and rotating it until you go back in guard
  • Rotate your shoulders too unless you are in a traditional competition
  • Kiai! if you are competing in point sparring

Where to use (✅ - Use; ❌ - Don’t use; 🟨 - Last resource):

  • Sport Kumite: ❌
  • Full-Contact Kumite: ✅
  • Self-Defense: ✅
