Kakato-Geri is the axe kick of Karate. It gets is power by the fall of the whole leg. It’s banned in some sport competitions. Allowed or not however, it should be avoided because it’s difficult to land and easy to grab before execution. In self-defense it should be absolutely avoided.

Traditional execution:

  • Get in Heiko Dachi
  • Raise your leg straight to your face (without bending it)
  • Make the leg fall on the inside
  • Kiai! at maximum extention (optional)
  • While retracting perform another move (e.g: another Kakato-Geri)

Kumite execution:

  • Get in Kumite no Kamae and bounce a little
  • Raise your leg straight to your face (without bending it)
  • Make the leg fall on the inside
  • Kiai! if you are competing in point sparring

Kekomi adjustements:

  • Don’t snap your leg back
